Should i build a home gym or go to the gym? (and how much/what kind of equipment should be bought)?

Glad to have you back!

Well i picked up bodybuilding a while ago and have been going to a local gym. I can no longer stand going to a gym which is so over crowded.

My main question is regarding home gyms. As many of you know winter is coming, i would like to build the gym in a garage so what would be an inexpensive form of heating for a garage.

What kind of workout equipment would be essential to own?

Is it worth building my own gym or staying at an overcrowded gym?

I would always prefer to have my own place for working out. At least you know if the equipment has been maintained and kept clean! Once I get a home, I plan on setting up a room that will accomodate the following:

* Total Gym
* Free Weights
* Crossbow or Bowflex type fixed machine
* there was an electronic one made several yrs ago that I got a video on, but it’s in storage (or with my ex!), so can’t remember the name of the product. They used hydraulics and a computer to keep track of workouts.

Of course, this workout environment is all a dream for now. I do have a membership with Balleys for under $100 per yr, but that was because it was thru a special promo life membership in 1985. So, I have used them over the yrs, but still am wanting my own workout place, really.

As far as heating or cooling, a garage is good, extra room in the house, or they have "Morton" type framed buildings that you can set up, get the permits, cement slab, electric, and you’re set!

Good luck!

    Hi Pal,

    Hi pal I’m a personal trainer and train both clients at home and at the gym. As a begainner training at home is fine, however as you move on and start to grow it becomes difficult to get the burn with machines you have at home.
    If you get fed up with it at home you’ll have a full garage of training equipment not even worth half price. To kit out a gym to a good standard will cost you alot of money.
    Also people can help spot you at the gym and you tend to show off a little more at the gym and lift heavier weights. However the best part about training at the gym is seeing new exercise you can do as well. If it’s to busy try another time or gym.
    If your a serious about training stick with the GYM

    I highly recommend Total Trainer DLX-3

    I looked for exercising machine to buy for my house but I didn’t want anything big that would take a lot of space. So I looked into 4 or 5 different companies that make equipment similar to the DLX III and all of them were pricier. I thought that the quality would suffer but I read other reviews and decided to buy it. And turned out that other reviewers were correct. This machine i quite heavy and quality made (shipped in one box and weighed slightly over 100 lbs.). Booklet covers a range of exercises but if you are creative you can come up with more. I’m 5′11 and it fits me well but I think anyone over 6′3 might feel uncomfortable. I’ve been using it for a month now, spend on average 25 mins about 5 times a week and am happy with results so far.

    The best prices and free shipping from the page I bookmark.
