Women & Bodybuilding….Your point of view!?

Posted by Bodybuilding Workouts on July 22, 2009

Glad to have you back!

I’m seriously considering taking up Female Bodybuilding with the view to entering at competition level.
I hear comments from different people & often those comments can be on the negative side.
Admittently I have seen some Female Bodybuilders that look more like Men in drag, but I’ve also seen some that still look very feminine & sexy. Negative comments more often than not tend to come from Women, & most of those with such opinions tend to be unfit & un-toned. I really would like to know what you Guys think of a female with muscle….I’m not talking Arnie here.
I don’t have a downer on other Women by the way, So this ones for the Gals too.
Perhaps you could state why you have your preference. Thanks everyone.
Thanks Guys, I really appreciate all the feedback on this.

Jooooo, you took a guess at the possibility that I liked Guys with Bodybuilding frames…..funny enough, I don’t. My Husband is not into Bodybuilding at all & probably never will be. I love him just as he is. This is just something that I’m interested in.

To the person that felt Bodybuilding is all about having a low self esteem, I understand your point of view, but for me that isn’t actually the case. However if someone felt it would help them in gaining self confidence, surely that would be a plus. Quite honestly it takes a fair bit of self esteem to even embark on a project such as this.

Thanks also to all those concerned about the steroid issue. I understand the point you’re all making & have taken your comments on board. Steroids are not an option for me though… as I have seen a friend go down that road & lose their life as a result.

Once again, thankyou all for your answers.
K.B.

In the long run, it should be about what makes you happiest – doing anything because you think men/women will approve is just going to cause issues further down the line.

But, you asked for an opinion, so…

I have met only one man that liked body-building women – most men find it a real turn-off (I think it’s an inferiority complex thing). However, I would imagine men who are into body-building are more likely to like women with that look (and I hazard a guess they are the type of men you like, too?)

Women bodybuilders do tend towards looking a bit manly, but this is often to do with taking steroids. This causes a deepening of the voice, growing more body and facial hair and heart problems later in life. Steroids should be completely avoided, and if you don’t think you can withstand the pressure to take steroids in what is a very competitive ’sport’, then maybe bodybuilding is not for you.

All in all, I would recommend you think about what are your reasons for choosing this path and weigh up the pros and cons, and make sure you’re doing it for the right reasons (ie, not doing it to impress others). And if you do decide to go for it, good luck!

if thats what you want to do then go for it, it is not really attractive to guys though to be honest.

i know you say not like arnie but if you got muscles to flex then it looks manly and puts most guys off.

horrible, they have that leather skin and a mad, agressive look on their face. And those american teeth!! …what’s THAT about?

Most men find it a turn off. If you have low self esteem ( because thats really what bodybuilding’s about) then there are many more natural ways to develop as a person. Ways that DON’T involve taking steroids.

I don’t find muscly women attractive, but then you probably wouldn’t find my middle age spread attractive. I suppose it’s just that I percieve slender as feminine. Do what you’re comfortable with. :-)

My opinion and that of those fellows I’ve asked are of a mind that competition-level females are strange creatures to be shunned, intimidating to some, unappealing to all.
But, being reasonable people, we all agree that ‘To each her own’
    is the word.

personally i see nothing with women gaining muscle mass but, the mass it takes to become a professional body builder does make a woman look like a man and your breasts can end up looking like pecs unless you get implants which look silly ontop of such toned muscle. You can suffer from amenorrhea and that doesnt help with the stigma that female body builders are appearing more like men.

Possibly if you avoid all steroids and speak to a female proffesional who can help you get the look you want, you can still be happy with how you look.

    best of luck

Being very fit is usually a good thing for looks, but from what i’ve seen of competition level, it is mainly those who make it that far who look like men in drag, as you put it. There are a few exceptions, but it’s somewhat unattractive when you lose almost all the visible fat from your body to be pure muscle.

In my honest opinion, I really don’t like to see women or indeed men overdo it! It looks strange, and I’ve never personally seen a female bodybuilder that looks otherwise.

It’s great look toned but, but to look overdone looks a little weird in my eyes. Sorry.

Female bodybuilding is fine. I must confess i don’t find overtly muscular women a turn on, but if you’re serious about wanting to weight train, it should be for you, and not about what people find attractive. There are people who will like it, and those who will not. I train several times a week to keep myself strong for rugby, but not all women will like that frame.

Best i can say is good luck, and be aware it will take several years for a woman to reach those kind of sizes anyway, so you’ll have plenty of chance to stop if it’s not right for you.
